Filler Deck

I’m no builder.
I can fudge my way around a scene shop and possibly figure out how to build something but I’m not a builder.

Tonight I had a stage carpentry class that was about building filler decks. That is decks that fill in gaps in a show floor.

I failed.

Now I tried, really did but I just couldn’t wrap my mind around it. I took tons of measurements but couldn’t make it work.

Like a late 90s animated show on the WB I crashed and burned. Gave it my all, learned a few things but ultimately failed at the task given me.

There was a time, close to a decade now, when I could have gotten closer. Could have made it almost work. Back when Rich Watson and I had to ‘plug the Stephie hole’ or Luna and I were given an odd set of geometry to make a plug. But now after years of lighting, video and audio I just failed.
Failed gloriously, mind you, and perhaps pushed the patience of the instructors but they told me to come back and put in some hours to learn it. Odd thing is I will. I feel like I should learn this. Should get some kind of grip of being a building and make a better effort.

But for right now I’m reminded of a wall of failures and that’s pretty much where I stand in this class. Great experience but I did terrible.

Currently I’m teching I’m a show.
Instead of giving day by day updates of my tech experience I’m going to condense it into one big update.
