Three nights ago while leaving work my chain snapped.
As I was crossing 7th and Pike I heard some slippage and then lost all power.
My assumption, wrongly so, was I jumped off my gears.
As I tried to get to the sidewalk the dawning realization of my first major problem occurred.

I got the chain repaired.
There’s a one room bike repair place near my home.
The owner and head mechanic is a nice guy and helped me out when some glass tore apart my rear tire.
With later calls I decide that biking in would be an excellent idea.

If only the weather agreed with my opinion.

In Ballard it was sprinkling.
Not terrible.
Quite doable but I did stop and pick up some water proof pants on my way in. Just made sense.
Then as I cross Westlake the heavens open up and it pours.

Yet as I got to work I have realized two things: 1. My “Rain jacket” is not water proof.
2. Getting some more rainy weather gear is a good idea.

Well… hell

Last night as I biked home I really worried I wasn’t getting any better.
Hills still seem very hard.
Some slight grades are tough.
In fact my commutes don’t seem to be getting much better and I still arrive quite sweaty.

So last night while a light rain fell and I waited for a light to change I thought of this. Wondered if all was for naught.

Then I got home. Stopped my various trackers and was told I beat myself on a segment.

This morning I still wondered about progress while crossinfg the Femont Bridge. Going up Dexter is still quite daunting but I should try it.

Yet when I got to work and stopped meters I had gotten personal bests on 3 segments. Apparently I am getting better even if I don’t feel it all the time.

Thing is the toughest part of my commute is the fact I ride in traffic nearly the whole way. Having to compete with cars and trucks, being cut off by taxis, and the persistent worry about road rage from commuters it’s fine. I’ll figure it out somehow but for the moment just keep at it.

Reteching a sequence means I have time to make a new key leash.

Sunday Calamity

Today I blew out a tire.
Not a small hole either a big chunk of glass tore up both my tube and my tire.

As I sat by the Burke looking at Fred Meyer I considered buying another tube and doing it myself.
Without my iron.
Or pump.
And hoping they have the right tube.

Screw it I went to a bike shop on the trail.

Nice guys and I bet they compliment everyone’s bike but still was nice to hear my bike complimented.

Changed my tire, showed me the glass and various holes so I replaced both. Then sent me on my way.

This sort of issue reminds me why it’s good to leave for work plenty of time to spare.

Cheater Commute

Each night starts here

The new job has some strange hours.
Most days the prospect of biking in seems far too difficult for me.
That extra bit of sleep trumping any notion of riding in.
That was until King County Metro and I had a disagreement about busing.
Nothing major just I felt I should be able to bus home without waiting a half hour and Metro felt running nearly empty buses all night is a waste.

So I decided to get parking.
Not the expensive nearby parking that would eat up a chunk of my pay.
God no.
Far more reasonable parking by the Seattle Center.
Thing is this didn’t work out.
It’s off the main routes so I’d still get home about the same time as my bus.
Except days I miss the 1130 bus.
Then this parking situation worked out.

Until I noticed the bike racks.
Hidden enough I don’t overly worry about leaving my bike somewhere overnight.
And it’s barely

10 minutes added for a quick ride.

A ride full of traffic at the top of the day and avoiding taxis at night.

Yet it’s a ride. Bit over a mile each way but it’s something.

Where my ride ends

Late Morning

The new job is beginning to make sense.
In the confusion and strangeness of moving from small houses to the cavernous depths of one of the biggest houses in town I am adjusting.
It’s not easy.
My skills are there but the method to working this way aren’t in grained in me.
While I’ve only been employed there for three weeks it feels so much longer.
Not helping this are the long days.
Truly long that is.
Eight in the morning to eleven thirty at night long.
Long to the point of going home, eating something, showering, sleeping, waking up, going to work and repeat.
Four to six hours of sleep.
Six days a week.
For nearly three weeks.

These are not conditions under which humans thrive.
One say while riding the bus I looked down to see I had written, ” Possibility of physical and mental collapse now very real. No sympathy for the devil. Remember that. Buy the ticket, take the ride.”
In a text to a friend.

Yet there is an amount of fun and a huge challenge to rise in this position.

But today.
Today we have a short maybe 5 hour call and we’re done.

Since I hadn’t touched my bike in what felt like months and our call was noon, the sun is shining, there is no day like today.

I biked in.

Not today but i miss this

I had missed that feeling.
The wind, the sun, the feeling of propelling myself along the streets of Seattle. Slowly going up hills and people with children pon leashes and dogs freely running the trail.
Odd but that has been such a great experience.
It became routine and I lost it.
Moved to bus and car.
Realized driving was quicker but parking sucked.
Yet one garage has covered bike racks.
I have an idea.
It may work.
But today I biked in and it was good.
