Top of the Smith Tower

This past weekwpid-img_108022051944749.jpegend I over dressed to a wedding reception.

True that’s becoming a bit common for me but more than that I knew I’d be complimented. Honestly since I over dressed for an opening party and while sitting at Skillet counter and was asked if I was originally from Seattle because I didn’t dress like I did. That veil compliment insult about not fitting in has become something I rather like.

Also it’s good to be called dapper which happens more and more as I dress up and expand my wardrobe. True I don’t get many chances to wear these clothes in my day to day life I do at these parties and rare occasions.

It’s a great feeling even if I was a bit out of place but, come one, the dress code was “comfortable elegance”.

Just Visiting

Ventured down to Long Beach to visit my family.
Also to see some of the town where I once lived and I’m not exactly sure why I never biked when I lived here.
Sure I walk a fair bit but eventually the car culture of Los Angeles did catch up to me as I began to drive.
And from there it never fully left.
Even now as I try to make biking my default means of travel I have to fight against the drive to, well, drive.

Also I’m fairly certain the bike lanes, lights, and overall infrastructure wasn’t in place when I lived here.
Yeah I recall riding my BMX to Marina Pacifica a number of times  to catch a movie  butIt- there were no bike paths. We’d ride without helmets on the sidewalk. Not that there were pedestrians. After all no body walks in LA.
Or so the rumor goes.

But today, right now, Long Beach is making biking seem quite attractive and one way is the bike racks.
No tubular grey steel racks here.
Blue bikes, suns, multicolor fish by the Lagoon, and coffee cups in front of cafés .
It’s a small thing but it gives the notion of riding a bike more whimsy and less serious spandex.
or so I feel.

Bike Month

So far the whole ride to work thing hasn’t worked out too well.
First I was out of town.
Then I slacked off because 8am is really early.
Today was different.
Today meant finishing my rental rectifying.

Yeah that kind of stress would wear on me.

So I biked.
That way I had a way of working through the stress.
Oh and I tried out my new shopping basket.

And it easily fits some tall boys

When days are shitty just remember the Locks

When days are shitty just remember the Locks

Today seemed like a good day to ride.
Not too warm, sunny, plenty of other bikes so if I were to be hit it’d be similar to an old man plowing through a farmer’s market.
Yet when my alarm went off at 6am it seemed the worst thing on Earth.
Couple that with the pain that the inability to adjust my seat’s angle has caused to my upper thighs and it was a no go.

Shame really.
I wager that 40 minute ride would have changed some of my outlook for the day. See the thing is thing never panned out today.

Starting with my leaving my e brake off as I left my car causing it to roll for a bit, not enough to cause destruction but enough to cause anxiety. Then giving poor direction to overhires, not difficulty following instructions, and lastly the over all feeling of lethargy at the end of the day.

Then as I’m driving home I see a bike train, fairly long one too, one of mixed skills and ability. Some folks in spandex and some folks in regular clothes. I wished I had joined in. I think that the bike commute could have made my day a bit better.
But I chose to drive.
A choice I regret.
A choice that upsets me.

So warm

Today saw the start of bike to work month.
And what a warm summery day to start it off with.
So obviously the trails were busy, I mean busy to the point of crowded.
Even the Westlake Slalom that I take to avoid Dexter was crowded. |t’s just me and the occasional other biker but today. Today I watched a car try to maneuver into a spot only to be engulfed by a stream of bikes on either side. The helpless driver not able to move in either direction as bells rang on each side and I may have heard at least one “on your left”.
Come on folks it’s behavior like this that gives the bike riding public a bad name.
Pass on the left and be fully aware that this lot is mixed use and have some courtesy. Not saying come to a stop and wait but at least know we need to share the road. Those stickers don’t just apply to cars.
Well tomorrow should be interesting and then Saturday may end up car but despite any problems with fellow riders it was good to see so many folks out and about.
